Sunday Sermon 16: Fortify Yourself with Faith

By Blamuel Njururi, Kenya Confidential Editor-in-Chief, Nairobi – September 1, 2017

When you say prayer in faith, you receive what you need God to do in you and your families’ life. Faith in God and yourself keeps you away from corruption and other social evils

Our Sermon today is on the subject of faith. Faith is the conscious and subconscious mechanism that makes sense in what we venture into our lives. Faith drives our ambitions and our expectations in life.

Kenyans are currently facing great political, economical and social challenges that can rip apart families, communities and the country called Kenya. My appeal is for Kenyans to have faith within themselves, their families, communities and our Motherland that God will pull us through. Kenya will emerge a stronger country than ever before and communities will be on a journey towards justice and prosperity.

What can you learn from this simple narrative?

Martha, a poorly dressed lady with a look of defeat on her face, walked into a grocery store. She approached the owner of the store in a most humble manner and asked if he would give her a few groceries on credit.

She softly explained that her husband was very ill and unable to work, they had seven children and they needed food. The grocer, scoffed at her and requested that she leave his store at once.

In desperation, she pleaded: ‘Please, sir! I will bring you the money just as soon as I can.’   The grocer told her he could not give her credit, since she did not have a charge account at his store.

A well-dressed stranger standing beside the counter, overheard the conversation between the two. He walked forward and told the grocer that he would pay for whatever she needed for her family.

The grocer said in a very reluctant voice, ‘Do you have a grocery list?’

Martha replied, ‘Yes sir.’

‘O.K’ he said, ‘put your grocery list on the scales and whatever your grocery list weighs, I will give you that amount in groceries.’

Martha hesitated a moment with a bowed head, then she reached into her purse and took out a piece of paper and scribbled something on it. She then laid the piece of paper on the scale carefully with her head still bowed.

The eyes of the grocer showed amazement when the scales went down and stayed down.   The grocer, staring at the scales, turned slowly to the stranger and said begrudgingly, ‘I can’t believe it.’

The stranger smiled and the grocer started putting the groceries on the other side of the scales. The scale did not balance so he continued to put more and more groceries on them until the scales would hold no more.   The grocer stood there in utter frustration.

Finally, he grabbed the piece of paper from the scales and looked at it in great amazement.

It was not a grocery list, it was a prayer, which said:   ‘Dear Lord, you know my needs and I am leaving this in your hands.’

The grocer gave her the groceries that he had gathered and stood in stunned silence.

Martha thanked him and left the store.

The stranger who was Jesus, handed a Gold coin to the grocer and said the Creator knows how much a prayer weighs.’

Whenever you face what to you may appear to be insurmountable problem, say a prayer. That’s all you have to do.

Just stop right now, and say a prayer of thanks for your own good fortune.

When you say prayer in faith, you receive what you need God to do in you and your families’ life. Faith in God and yourself keeps you away from corruption and other social evils.

So dear reader, Trust God to know your very own needs, to heal the sick, to provide food for the hungry, for clothes and shelter to those that don’t have as we do.

Life without Faith is like ship on a voyage without destination. Faith is the fuel that drives human beings when they choose their destination in life. Jesus tells us that we will have troubles in this world, it’s a guarantee. However, He also promises that we have victory through our faith because Jesus overcame the world.

If you are facing hard and uncertain times, you can be encouraged to press on knowing that you are an overcomer! Read the summary of Romans below about having faith in hard times to lift your spirits and to share with others questioning God’s goodness.

Romans 5:3-18 expounds on the Power of Faith.

3 Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 Perseverance, character; and hope.

5 And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. 6 You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly.

7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

9 Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him! 10 For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!

11 Not only is this so, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation. 12 Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned.

13 To be sure, sin was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not charged against anyone’s account where there is no law. 14 Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam, who is a pattern of the one to come.

15 But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many!

16 Nor can the gift of God be compared with the result of one man’s sin: The judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation, but the gift followed many trespasses and brought justification.

17 For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!

18Consequently, just as one trespass resulted in condemnation for all people, so also one righteous act resulted in justification and life for all people.

Faith drives righteousness for the sinful have no faith.

1 Peter 5:7-10 appeals to us to cast our anxiety upon God.

7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

8 Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.

10 And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.
